THE HOME IN YOUR HEAD

If you've been on this trip with me from the beginning, you'll remember I used a quote, something about the "home in one's head".
Sometimes, when I get to wonder who besides Dan and my wife actually reads this stuff, I wonder  what that phrase might mean to others.

Some may not have a home; when I was a ward of the Court, I met a lot of kids like that, who either couldn't remember, or the memories were too horrible to face.

Other people, and I suspect I'm one of them, re-write it as we go along, editing out the really bad stuff, and putting a Vaseline haze over the images that are left.

I look at that picture of our house-in my mind, it's nowhere near that shabby, and it's HUGE....I'd love to be able to walk through it now, just to see.

Were all those nice people really that nice? If I were to go back to Lorain, 1960, the age I am now, would I  be greeted by smiles and welcome?

Would I find I'd outgrown the places, and the people I'd loved?

Would there be things that I remember, that never happened?

Might it even be possible, that all that has come since, is nothing more than the dream of a four year-old, who even now AWAKENS-

  1. Love this pic Alan! I vividly remember being at the light of Elyria and 21st with my parents
all the activity there houses, business' etc Mittendorfs, there was a building across from your house, I think an Owl was painted on it for some reason. A building with little change is the on the NE corner by the side street towards East Ave. Still I have an image of the objects filling the windows up high. Allot of our world was w/i a mile. First Fed, Bobs Donuts, Born at StJo's, my Mother only bought furniture from Riedys as they were the only one to give credit to a blind lady. Do I remember Coons store on Broadway a variety store? 2. Hey, Stretch!
Glad you enjoyed this post. Actually, our house was on Elyria, right where 19th ran into it; the entrance to Gaylord's was right about where our driveway was. Our house was behind another house.

The owl you're talking about was the logo for Central Trust Bank's ATM system, and it was on their branch building on 21st.

I know the building you're talking about, that was jammed full of stuff, I never knew its name, nor do I remember ever seeing it open; it seemed to be a second-hand store of some kind.

Cane's was the surplus store on Broadway, near the Palace and Ohio.

We bought our furniture from Delis Bros.

    STAY FROSTY!
